Nov. 2007: Starting November 15, 2007, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority will be accepting residential carpet for recycling. Along with conserving landfill space, carpet recycling offers other environmental benefits because most carpet is a petroleum-based product. Carpet recycling programs can save more than 700,000 barrels of oil per year and conserve 4.4 trillion BTUs of energy. With less energy being used to produce new carpet, air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions are being lowered.
